how to store winter items......

We are well into April and it is only a matter of weeks before the windows are open to let in all that warm, fresh air!  Here in the colder climates, we are switching around our winter wardrobes for our lighter spring clothing.  But just how do you store all those expensive winter items?   There is a proper way to store your furs, cashmeres and leathers........

Fur Storage:  Furs should be professionally cleaned at least once a year, so make sure yours is cleaned prior to storage.  Store furs in professional, climate controlled storage facilities.  This prevents the skins from drying out and will protect it from insect and heat damage.  The optimal setting for storage is a temperature of 40 to 50 degrees and a humidity level of 45 to 55 percent.

Cashmere Storage:  Clean cashmere garments prior to storage.  Moths and other insects are attracted to dirt and odors.  To store sweaters:  wrap them in acid free tissue paper and fold them into canvas bags or boxes.  Never hang them as they will stretch!

Leather Storage:  Clean leather prior to storage.  Leather must have stains removed as they could oxidize  while in storage and then may be impossible to remove.  Store on wooden hangers to help keep their shape and never cover with plastic!  Leather needs to breathe and will dry out under plastic.  Use a cloth garment bag or don't cover at all and never store near heat!
